Sanctuary Advisory Council
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was established in March 1996. Serving in a volunteer capacity, the council members represent a variety of local user groups, as well as the general public.
Sanctuary Advisory Council primary members serve three-year terms and meet several times each year in public sessions. Voting members represent the Islands of Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi, Maui, and Oʻahu, in addition to local user groups, Native Hawaiian cultural advisors, and fishing, business, conservation, science, education, and community representatives. Non-voting federal and state agency representatives also hold seats on the council. Members are appointed by the sanctuary management in consultation with the director of NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
The role of the council is to provide advice to the sanctuary superintendent on the sanctuary's operations and to serve as liaisons to constituents in the community. Council members share information about the sanctuary with the public and bring the concerns of constituents and the public to the attention of sanctuary management.
The council charter guides operations of the council.
